What We Do
Media&Democracy Group works with partners and clients to support and enhance journalism in emerging democracies and post-conflict societies. We respond to requests for proposals to deliver training, research, monitoring and evaluation. We also work with civil society and research institutions. M&DG’s training strengths include:
Basic and Specialist Reporting Skills
We help develop news reporting and editing skills in all media in countries around the world. We train journalists in web-based reporting and we work with local partners to help the media deliver better economic, gender sensitive, health and political coverage.
Media Management
We help news managers hone their media-management skills, and we do management-efficiency audits in newsrooms.
Monitoring and Evaluation
M&DG members work with international organizations to assess media capacity, monitor programs, and evaluate their effectiveness.
Research and Education
We carry out media development research, analyze practices and issues in international media support, and develop curricula and training materials.
Conflict Sensitive Reporting
Reporting on violent conflict severely challenges journalists to be professional, sensitive to the impact of their work and aware of all players and possibilities. M&DG’s experienced trainers help journalists strike the right balance through Conflict Sensitive Reporting. Conflict Sensitive Reporting provides journalists with additional insight into conflict and its resolution and how to report on the situation without becoming part of the problem.
Media and Elections
One of the specialties of M&DG’s trainers is working with media in elections. We not only train journalists in reliable election coverage but also work with election management bodies to achieve transparency and encourage public participation in elections through the media.
